The Sacred Heart School (previously known as St Mary's College High School) is highly significant to the Verulam area and displays a high level of architectural and social significance. The site was surveyed by Prof. Walter Peters as part of the survey of old North Coast towns conducted for the National Monuments Council in 1996. Grading by:
Architectural Significance: a heavily rusticated and arcuated base supports two additional floors, with a veranda and arched window openings on the first floor with less significant decoration on the second floor. A heavily moulded corner tower and ceremonial staircase leading to the first floor add to the grandeur of the building. Social/Religious/educational Significance: the school was founded by Catholic nuns in 1903 and the building was added to by the Italian Prisoners of War in 1944.
