Permit Application section 35 mitigation Makhado Colliery

This proposal seeks a Permit to effect a section 35 mitigation of the sites that will be impacted by the development. Makhado Colliery is located on the farms Lukin 645MS and Salaita 188MT, close to thirty kilometres towards Musina, north of Louis Trichardt. Situated along the Soutpansberg flats, the mining project will extract the very rich coal deposits in the area. A series of HIAs were performed (Roodt 2011, 2012) as part of a larger EIA process (Jacana 2012). This was followed by an assessment of heritage resources to be impacted by the confirmatory drilling activities and establishment of ancillary mining infrastructure (Millennium Heritage 2018; Durand 2018).
