    Object Description

    Inscribed postal stone. On the one side is a Dutch inscription, on the other a French inscription. The Dutch inscription refers to the ships Banda, Wassenaer and Egmont that left Texel in the Netherlands on 7 December 1633 bound for Asia. The ships visited the Cape from 7 until 11 April 1684.

    Part of the historical collections of the South African Museum that were transferred to the South African Cultural History Museum in the 1960s, today forming part of the Social History Collections of Iziko Museums of South Africa.

    A postal stone with two inscriptions, one on the face side, the other on the reverse side. The inscriptions are Dutch and French respectively.

    Inscriptions
    One side has a Dutch engraved inscription: 1634 BANDA WASSENAER EN D[E] EGMONT SYN DEN XI APRIL VERTROCKE SOECKT BRIEF. The reverse side has a French inscription: ICY EST ARIVE DAVID DIGAED DE DIEPPE 8 JO[UR] DE FEV[R]IER 1...[640]
