Object Description
Stinkwood desk on stand or bible desk, Cape, c. 1750. Ornate ivory and ebony inlay work, including wind rose or compass medallion designs. Brass handles. In two parts. Top section with sloping lid resting on a base with four baluster turned legs and a cross stretcher. The base has a drawer.
Provenance
The bible desk forms part of the William Fehr Collection at the Castle of Good Hope, today part of the Social History Collections of Iziko Museums of South Africa. The Fehr Collection is a Specifically Declared Heritage Collection with the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA). It was purchased by the government in 1964.
