REDUNDANT ASSET ;The 15 BR is very similar to the 15 AR except that they had bar frames and other typical American features. When these locomotives were fitted with the standard No2A boilers they were re classified as Class 15 BR. An offer to purchase Locomotive 15BR #1979 for preservation purposes was also received and is pending SAHRA recommendation. The museum has two books where the history of this class is captured " Locomotive of South Africa" by Leith Paxton and David Bourne and "Railways of Southern Africa" by Jean Dulez. Drawings(plans) and other historical information relating to this class is in safe custody at the Transnet Heritage Library.
In consultation with experts this locomotive was identified as not having any heritage significance. A similar locomotive representing this type/class of locomotive is preserved.
