We acknowledge receipt of your application for a permit to carry out work on the above property. The KZN Amafa and Research Institute (The Institute) reviewed the application on the 30th of August 2023.
Please be advised as follows: -
(1) Revise the drawings to ensure that all the important Tudor Style elements are kept: such as the slightly arched and pointed windows (outside and inside the house); the led work on the windows (that divided the windows in smaller panes as only very small glass panes could be produced in 1485-1558 when glass was first introduced in houses); keep all the vertical and diagonal aesthetic timber design elements at the front façade and the side of the house that is visible from the road - since the white and black, or brown and black contrasts associated with Tudor Style is a main element of this period. The Revival Tudor Style in South Africa incorporated both real wood as well as aesthetic moulding when it reached South Africa between 1920 and 1940s, and even later (in contrast with other countries were the Tudor Revival Style was dated between 1890-1920). The portico must be retained. All slightly arched doors and arched timber mouldings inside and outside the house must be kept. The all small glass stained windows must be retained.
Written responses/requests for review of the decision taken must be received via email to [email protected] and [email protected] within 30 days of the date of this letter or any decision contained herein will be considered final.
THIS LETTER DOES NOT CONSTITUTE FORMAL APPROVAL OF THE PROPOSAL SUBMITTED TO THE INSTITUTE, UNAUTHORISED WORK CARRIED OUT ON THE ABOVE SITE WILL BE IN CONTRAVENTION OF THE KWA-ZULU NATAL AMAFA AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE ACT (5 of 2018)
