SAHRA assessed the Environmental Impact Report in the light of the previous heritage report and recommends that:

the archaeologist describes which sites amongst those identified will be affected by the development.
detailed mitigation measures must be proposed for them since the impact of the mine activities on them is now more clear.
if Stone Age sites are to be affected, then a better description for them is necessary. The archaeologist must specify the type of artefacts identified, the material used and the density of the artefacts for each site.
recommendations on graves still apply as per 2012 recommendations, however if the graveyard with burials older than 60 years is going to be affected by the mining activities and related infrastructure, appropriate mitigation measures must be put in place. While relocation must always be considered as the last option, effects of mining activities including blasting and increase traffic in the area must be taken into consideration.
if any new evidence of archaeological sites or artefacts, or other heritage resources are found during construction activities, the SAHRA APM Unit (Tel: 021-4624502), must be alerted immediately, and a professional archaeologist/palaeontologist must be contacted as soon as possible to inspect the findings at the cost of the developer. If the newly discovered heritage resources prove to be of archaeological/palaeontological significance, then a Phase 2 rescue operation might be necessary at the cost of the developer.
decisions in terms of Built Environment are not the responsibility of this Unit and must be referred to the Limpopo Heritage Resources Authority.
