Interim CommentThe SAHRA Archaeology, Palaeontology, and Meteorites (APM) Unit cannot make an informed decision on this proposed development because of the following:An assessment of impacts to palaeontological resources by a suitably qualified palaeontologist was not undertaken despite the Screening Tool stating that the area has medium significance, and the SAHRIS palaeo-sensitivity map indicating moderate palaeo-sensitivity. The HIA report indicates that the field survey was only along the road ways and not in the interior of the farm, as such large portions of the development area were not assessed by the appointed heritage specialist. The SAHRA will provide further comments on the case once the following is submitted to the case:
If there are additional tracklogs not uploaded and included in the HIA the report must be amended to include them. Otherwise, an additional foot survey of the study area must be undertaken by the appointed specialist and if additional heritage resources is identified then that must be included in the amended HIA report.
According to the palaeomap policy, a suitably qualified palaeontologist must be appointed to undertake a desktop palaeontological study of the proposed development area. The desktop Palaeontological report must adhere to the 2012 Palaeontological Minimum Standards Guideline document.
The environmental documents for the study area other than the Screening Tool report.
