Statement of Significance

Strand Street Quarry is the oldest known quarry in South Africa and was opened in 1660 for construction of Cape Town Castle. It was subsequently worked intermittently for foundation stone, fill and building stone in Cape Town. There are plans by the City of Cape Town and Table Mountain National Park to develop a Tourist Gateway at the quarry.
