Statement of Significance

The Genadendal Moravian Mission Station, which was founded by the missionary George Schmidt in 1737, is the oldest mission village in the Republic. The large number of historic buildings within the historic core date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and are predominantly in the Cape Dutch and vernacular styles.
