The house is an excellent example of a late 19th / early 20th century purpose built holiday house - one of only a few along this coast. The house is largely in its original condition. One of the owners, Mr C Joel Krige was a well-known local politician, being MP for Caledon and serving as the first Speaker of the Union Parliament. He was also co-founder and chairman of the Onrust River Seaside Town and Estate Company. The house was later owned by the Moravian Church, and was used as a holiday and rest house for the missionaries from Genadendal. The building of this house and its twin marks the beginning of the developemnt of Onrusrivier as a holday resort.
