Statement of Significance

The Grey Hospital was erected between 1856 and 1859 at the instance of Sir George Grey and intended mainly for the Bantu population of the former British Kaffraria. The hospital was designed by Edward Pilkington and opened on 11 June 1859. Architecturally this building is particularly imposing with its central bell tower, porch and the two double-storeyed wings.
