Statement of Significance

The concentration camp site at Uitenhage was in use from April to October 1902, and was one of the last of about 50 concentration camps that were established during the Anglo-Boer War. Mainly women and children from the Orange Free State were housed here in corrugated iron houses. The reputed house of the Camp Superintendent and other material remains, as well as the graveyard, still exist today.
