Andrew Geddes Bain discovered the kloof in 1846 when the Colonial Secretary, John Montagu, was searching for a direct route through the mountains between Cape Town and the new Michell's Pass. Montagu accepted the route for his highway and named it Bain's Kloof. Bain commenced construction work in February 1849 and the pass was opened on 12 September 1853 by the Chairman of the Central Road Board, P. B. Borcherds.
