Statement of Significance

This house attaches its significance from the fact that it is the only remnant of the builder Scribante in the Lichtenburg District that dates immediately after the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). Furthermore, it satisfies the criteria for the declaration of national monuments as it has historical, architectural and environmental interests. Historically, it was the property of Douw Gerbrand van der Merwe, a victim of the Anglo-Boer war concentration camps, an Afrikaner leader who loved and fought for the Afrikaner cause. In addition the house enjoyed housing guests of the status of Genl. JBM Hertzog, Dr DF Malan and the painter Pierneef. Architecturally it is the work of a major builder of his time. Environmentally, its contributes to the character of the area via its beauty as a guest house.
