Both these buildings represent important milestones in the history of the development of the Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoer Onderwys. The neo-Cape Dutch building known as Heimat, designed by Gerard Moerdijk and completed as a students’ hostel in 1927, was the first permanent building to be erected on the university campus. The Main Building, designed by the firm Louw & Louw and inaugurated in 1931, was the first and most important permanent academic building on the campus.
