The establishment of schools in general was in accordance with the education policy of the South African Republic, left to the parents. The government was then prepared to subsidise such schools. As exceptions however, a few schools of which the Staats Model School is one were established by the Government. It opened in 1893 but was properly housed in this building in 1897 only.
