Die Vesting, which is one of the largest remaining wood and iron houses in Voortrekkerhoogte, was erected by the British military authorities shortly after the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). Since the beginning of the century it has accommodated several high-ranking Defense Force officers, including the famous Sir Pierre van Ryneveld, the nearby blockhouse probably dates from the Anglo-Boer War and is one of the few remaining examples of a wood and iron blockhouse.
