Statement of Significance

This red brick double-storey house was built in 1926 by Mr Thomas Mtobi Mapikela. The house is of major historical importance because of its association with Mapikela, who was one of the founding fathers of the ANC and speaker of the organisation for more than 25 years. He also played an important role in the socio-political activities of the township, presently known as Mangaung.
