The Government Buildings was completed in 1877, although the Volksraad Chamber which was part of the building, had already been occupied on 31 May 1875. In 1895 the upper storey was completed and in 1902 again Sir Herbert Baker and Masey slightly altered the existing building. In October 1908 a part of the Government Buildings burnt down, after which it was restored by architect Taylor to plans by Sir Herbert Baker.
