Statement of Significance

This house is the oldest known double-storeyed dwelling erected outside the Cape Colony. It was built about 1840 by the Voortrekker leader. General Andries Pretorius, who also constructed the historic mill and the water furrow on the site. After the property, which was originally known as Welverdient, had been sold to the Rev. James Allison on 30 July 1851, the house became part of a flourishing Wesleyan mission station known as Edendale.
