The site is unique in its close association with the origins of the Liberation Struggle, through its being the home of John Dube the first leader of the major liberation movement, and the completion of the cycle of liberation when Nelson Mandela came to cast his vote at the site.
The original home of John L Dube and the Old School Hall where Nelson Mandela cast his first vote. The modest buildings of the colonial style John Dube House and the original hall of the school which he built. This, bear testimony to the life of John Dube and his aspirations to encourage his people to enter the modern world through education. As the first the school that was established and directed by Africans, the site further testifies to the pioneering of African education in South Africa.
The site is strongly associated to the to the early history of the struggle as the home, workplace and resting place of the ANC’s first President; and represents the full circle of the liberation struggle and the achievement of its aims through its physical associations to the casting of the first vote in a free and democratic elections in 1994, by who came to be the first democratically elected President.
