    Descriptions
    Site History

The Mpumalanga Township is located approximately 30km away from Durban, and was established by the local municipality in the late 1960s as a typical apartheid labour reserve. The Mpumalanga Heritage Centre is a site of memory and a reminder of an extraordinary time in the history of Mpumalanga. It tells the story of the political violence that engulfed Mpumalanga from 1983 to 1992, and how the people of this community resolved to end this conflict and make peace with one another. This Centre is a joint project of the Mpumalanga Peace and Development Trust, the eThekwini Municipality Department of Economic Development, and Durban Local History Museums. Visitors are invited to reflect on past events and how we can learn from these in order to create a better future for all.
