The memorial was unveiled in 2001 and honours six youth activists who were killed by apartheid state police during the period between 1985 and 1993. The student activists were Mpumelelo Mfundisi, Nowinki Mpoza, Nomathemba Lengs, Xolekile Mokheseng, and Fuzile Cingani – all from Mzamomhle, Burgersdorp. Mfundisi was a pupil at the Solanga Higher Primary School which was later named after him. He was shot dead by police while protesting against the then Mzamomhle mayor Ngxekeshe Mdyuba on 11 October1985. Police shot dead Mokheseng during a protest against police patrols in townships on 7 March 1986. Mpoza and Lengs were shot on 16 June 1986, when they and other student activists engaged in a door-to-door campaign persuading students to fight against the Bantu Education system. Cingani was shot dead by the police on 17 April 1993, during Operation Barcelona - a student protest against examination fees.
