Rooi Hell Prison

In 1857, the decision was made to seek a site for a new prison in Port Elizabeth, as the old Jail at the foot of Castle Hill was in a state of disrepair. In 1860, the new jail located at the North End of town was ready for occupation. The new establishment was enclosed by a high wooden palisade which was later replaced by a solid stone wall. Today the prison is referred to as the North End Prison.
