    Site History

Marean (director of SACP4) invited Dr. Jayne Wilkins, then at the University of Cape Town, to lead excavations at Vleesbaai Areas B and C.  Wilkins received an excavation permit (Case Number 15031222GT0316E) to excavate. SACP4 provided logistical support to Wilkins and her team, and Wilkins directed excavations (assisted by Dr. Simen Oestmo) at Area B.  Wilkins eventually resigned her leadership at Vleesbaai so as to focus on her field research in the northern Cape, and then Oestmo and subsequently Marean continued excavations at Area C under the permit issued to Wilkins so as to complete the proposed research.  Field research was paused to catch up on analysis of materials and also due to Covid-19.
