    Site History

The occurrence of bones at Swartklip was first noted by Singer and Fuller (1962), with Hendey and Hendey (1968) later describing fossils that had been collected up to 1966. Subsequent collections at Swartklip 1 were reported by Klein (Klein, 1975, 1983). Amino acid racemization ages from ostrich eggshell suggest the site dates to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6, between 186 and 130 ka (Klein et al., 2007). This is consistent with an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age for a paleosol situated stratigraphically above the fossil assemblage, which dates to MIS 5e (~130 ka) (Roberts et al., 2009)
