Proposed Development of the Elsinore Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and Associated Infrastructure– Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Lejweleputswa District Municipality, Free State Province.

Elsinore BESS (Pty) Ltd proposes the construction and operation of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and associated infrastructure on Remainder Portion 1 of the Farm Elsinore Number 12 Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Lejweleputswa District Municipality, Free State Province, South Africa


The proposed project will include the following infrastructure:

A BESS with a capacity of up to 492 MWh, inside containers with a footprint of up to 9 ha in extent and a maximum height of 8m. Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System technology is being considered for the project.
Access road to the BESS (6m in width) to be located within the total BESS footprint area.
Fencing around the BESS for security purposes.
Temporary laydown area to be located within the BESS area.
Firebreak to be located within the BESS area.
Substation
The entire BESS facility, including Battery containers, laydown area, substation, switching station and operations buildings will have a footprint of approximately 9 ha (i.e “BESS Site” indicated in Figure 2.1 below).
