Site History
south-facing rock shelter with a deep overhang lies in the rocky cap of a koppie overlooking the Sout River. Although there is not much archaeological deposit inside the shelter (if any), there is an extensive talus slope with many thousands of flaked stone artefacts and ostrich eggshell fragments as well as some pottery. It appears as though the shelter may have been dug out in the past and a mound is visible in front of its mouth. Both on the shelter floor and on the talus the flaked artefacts are of quartz, quartzite and fine-grained black rocks. Bone is present in both places, but most is likely recent. Other evidence of recent use of the shelter is present and a small mine/test excavation occurs on the slope below the shelter.
