Proposed development of the Rivierplaats Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and associated infrastructure near Sasolburg, Free State Province

Rivierplaats Energy Facility (RF) (Pty) Ltd. proposes the construction and operation of the Rivierplaats Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and associated infrastructure on a site located near the town of Sasolburg. The BESS capacity is up to 150MW/600MWh with six four hours of storage. The project falls within the jurisdiction of the Ngwathe Local Municipality, and the Fezile Dabi District Municipality, in the Free State Province. The Rivierplaats BESS is proposed to be bid as part of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) for the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) or suitable private off-taker initiatives. The BESS will save and store excess energy during low demand and will provide energy into the national grid, during high demand periods.'
