Amafa / Heritage KwaZulu Natali is the provincial heritage conservation agency for KwaZulu Natal. Amafa was established as a statutory body in terms of the KZN Heritage Act of 1997, replaced by the KZN Heritage Act of 2008. The Council of Amafa is appointed by the Premier of KZN, and is funded through a grant from the same department. It has offices in Pietermaritzburg, Durban and Ulundi. Amafa administers the permit process for demolition and alteration of protected structures in KZN. It also manages several major heritage projects such as the Isandlwana Battlefield, Border Cave archaeological site and the KwaZulu Cultural Museum.
