Proposal Description
The Applicant, Mohau Solar PV (Pty) Ltd, is proposing the construction of a solar photovoltaic (PV) facility (Mohau 3 Solar PV) located on the Farm Kleinspringfontein No. 239, Farm Saamverdien No. 25, Farm Middelplaats No. 155, Farm Mij Siel’s Rust No. 177, Remaining Extent of the Farm Verwacht No. 360, Farm Montesfield No. 431, and Portion 2 of the Farm Montesfield No. 266, approximately 6.5 km south-east of the town of Reddersburg in the Free State Province.
The solar PV facility will comprise several arrays of PV panels and associated infrastructure and will have a contracted capacity of up to 410 MW. The development area is situated within the Kopanong Local Municipality area and greater Xhariep District Municipality.
Five (05) additional solar PV facilities (Mohau 1 Solar PV, Mohau 2 Solar PV, Mohau 4 Solar PV, Mohau 5 Solar PV and Mohau 6 Solar PV) are concurrently being considered on the adjacent properties and are assessed through separate Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment (S&EIA) processes.
The proposed Mohau 3 Solar PV will cover approximately 743ha assessed within the affected properties (a 1949 ha area) and will include the following infrastructure:
• PV modules and mounting structures
• Inverters and transformers
• Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
• Site and internal access roads (between 6 m and 8 m wide)
• Operation and Maintenance buildings including a gate house, ablution facilities, security building, control centre, offices, warehouses and workshops for storage and maintenance.
• Construction Camps
• Temporary and permanent laydown area
• For health, safety and security reasons, the facility will be required to be fenced off from the surrounding farms.
• Facility grid connection infrastructure, including:
o 132kV on-site facility substation
o Eskom Switching station
o Internal cabling or power lines between the project components and the onsite facility substations
o Proposed new 400kV Eskom Main Transmission Substation (MTS).
o 132kV Overhead Line (OHL) interconnecting the proposed Eskom Switching station to the proposed Eskom MTS.
o Loop in Loop out 400 kV OHL connection onto existing Eskom 400 kV OHL
Province(s): Free State
