The following application pertains to the proposed Maintenance Management Plan for the Robben Island Museum and associated maintenance works located on Robben Island, farm nr. 1436, within the jurisdiction of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, Western Cape Province in accordance with Section 27(18) of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999. The island has history from the precolonial era, the earliest travellers to South Africa, the Dutch occupation period, the British occupation period, the military period, apartheid period and currently as a museum, National Heritage Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overview of Content

The historical context of these sites includes a former government garage workshop from the prison era, part of the Island's World War Two infrastructure, and naval accommodation that later housed a dog unit and served as a Public Works workshop. Key sites include the original power station from 1941-42, a recreation area for officers in the 1980s, and Faure Jetty, which was initially built in 1829, destroyed in 1865, and rebuilt in 1898.

The statement of cultural significance of these sites has a collection of buildings that has limited architectural and aesthetic significance, primarily serving functional purposes, with the Faure Jetty being an important landmark on the Island. Some buildings are part of the Island's World War Two military infrastructure and support its historical function as a prison and its current role as the Robben Island Museum, contributing to the Island's overall identity, while the Faure Jetty holds additional significance as a key access point to the Island. The grouping has no known scientific, technological, spiritual, or linguistic significance.

The purpose of this application is for the proposed Maintenance Management Plan for the Robben Island Museum and associated maintenance works on the Functional Infrastructure which includes the following sites and their allocated building reference numbers: Desalination Plant (B454 – B457), Transport Workshop (B218 – B219), Alpha One (B274 – B275), TFMP Accommodations Facilities (B026, B070 – B077), Power Station (B024, B025, Faure Jetty (B264).
