    Proposal Description
    Gold Fields South Deep Gold Mine proposes the construction and operation of two (2) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities and associated infrastructure at the Twin Shaft and South Shaft substations at the South Deep Gold Mine. The site is situated in the West Rand District Municipality, within the jurisdiction of the Rand West City Local Municipality, Gauteng Province, South Africa.

    The proposed project will include the following infrastructure:
    Two (2) BESS sites with a capacity of up to 120 MWh, inside containers with a footprint of up to 3405 m2 for the Twin Shaft and 1100 m2 for the South Shaft. Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System technology is being considered for the project.
    Existing access roads will be utilised.
    Fencing around the BESS sites for security purposes.
    Firebreak to be located within the BESS facilities.
    11kV Cabling with a capacity matching the storage (up to 120MW done in phases) buried in ground trenches (culverts) or fitted onto above ground cable racks to connect the BESS to the Twin Shaft and South Shaft substations.
