Proposal Description
The proposed development entails the repair of Drift C12480, a low-level crossing over the Sarelsrivier, situated along Divisional Road (DR) 2390 at kilometre 8.13, within Farm No. 140, approximately 97 km from Beaufort West, Western
Cape. The site is located within an existing registered road reserve, and the proposed works are classified as a brownfield development as they involve maintenance and repair of an existing structure.
The proposed works will include the following:
- Clearing of concrete debris downstream (this will be crushed and re-used as rock fill);
- Demolish (where required) and replace the embankment protection slab on the downstream side;
- Filling of gaps using rockfill on the downstream side to construct the new embankment protection slab;
- Construction of new road slabs; and
- The construction of erosion protection works using gabion baskets and mattresses. The majority of the erosion protection will be constructed downstream (south) of the bridge crossing.
Based on the type of construction used on the structure, it was most likely constructed before 1997. The existing structure has been found to be damaged by historical flooding events and severe erosion is present at the river crossing. The existing infrastructure is deemed to be unsafe and requires urgent repairs.
