Proposal Description
Zitholele Consulting (Pty) Ltd has been appointed by SMEC, on behalf of the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL), to undertake the Scoping and Environmental Impact Reporting (S&EIR) process for the proposed upgrade of National Route N14 Section 13. This section extends from Ventersdorp (km 0.0) to the new North West/Gauteng provincial boundary (km 69.7), traversing the provinces of North West and Gauteng. The project area falls within the JB Marks and Merafong City Local Municipalities.
The N14 serves as a critical freight corridor linking Ventersdorp and Krugersdorp, predominantly passing through agricultural areas characterized by crop production and livestock farming.
Currently, the N14 is a two-lane, single carriageway classified as a Category A road in terms of TRH41 standards, with an average lane width of 3.7 metres and variable shoulder widths. The proposed upgrade is intended to improve both road capacity and design speed, with a strong focus on pavement rehabilitation due to the existing road's poor to severely deteriorated condition.
Key components of the proposed upgrade include:
Widening of selected sections of the road,
Pavement strengthening,
Realignment of certain segments, and
Upgrading of two existing bridges.
A new greenfield deviation is proposed between km 33 and km 34.4, which will comprise a single carriageway with a minimum road reserve of 40 metres.
Drainage enhancements will include the installation of:
Kerbs,
Open earth drains,
Sub-surface drains, and
Side inlets, as required.
Province(s): North West
