REFERRAL LETTER

The permit application in respect of the above, received and reviewed by the KwaZulu-Natal Amafa and Research Institute (The Institute) refers.

Please be advised as follows:

  • The committee was informed that the house had been neglected before the current owners purchased it.  They had done their best to maintain it, but the structural integrity had been compromised to the point that it was uneconomical to continue repairing the building.
  • The committee noted that the house had not been extensively altered and maintained a high degree of original features.
  • Alterations to the house over the years had not compromised its conservation worthiness.
  • It was noted that the proposed new buildings were set back off the footprint of the existing building.
  • The public consultation process was questioned as members of the public who were invited to attend through the Ward Committee and Ward Councilor indicated that the registered mail had not been delivered.
  • It was noted that the drawings and engineer report were only prepared after the poster was put up on the gate.  This brought the public consultation process into question.
  • It was agreed to give the public another 7 days to submit their comments.
  • A site inspection was proposed for the next day, pending the availability of transport.

The application was therefore referred for further requirements.
