Basic Assessment for the Lakenvlei Wetland Rehabilitation Project_Phase 2

The site is located GLPE is located 8 km north of Belfast in Wards 4 and 6 of the eMakhazeni Local Municipality, Nkangala District Municipality, within the Mpumalanga Province.
To fulfil a wetland offset agreement/requirement, Gootgevonden Colliery plans to contribute to the improvement of an existing wetland system within the Lakenvlei Protected area by constructing wetland rehabilitation structures within the Lakenvlei system. the proposed wetland rehabilitation structures require Environmental Authorisation (EA) under NEMA for removing or infilling more than 5m3 within a watercourse and the clearing of more than 300m2 of indigenous vegetation within a protected area. The proposed structures (Dongalocks, road crossings, dam wall repairs) are individually very small but cumulatively trigger the NEMA thresholds requiring EA.
