Proposal Description
In accordance with the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA)’s permitting policy and Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) regulations, a 100-meter buffer must be maintained around burial sites. It is important to note that the current 100m buffer for the burial site partly falls within our opencast area. Regrettably, this buffer significantly impedes our ability to proceed with mining operations.
PGS Heritage, our Heritage Consultant is currently assisting with the grave relocation process of some of the higher priority identified burial grounds (AL18 and AL23) which are located within the proposed pit area. The other burial sites (AL4, AL5, AL12, AL14, and AL15) will not be affected by direct mining activities but will require a buffer relaxation as they fall within the planned operations area.
