Abandoned quarry, which is now part of St Johns Estate, Higgovale, is of local interest since it was specifically opened for the supply of granite for Rhodes Memorial and operated between 1906 and 1907. Grading by: DOUG COLE
The remains of the small quarry and loose granite blocks are now present in the grounds of St Johns Estate at top of Upper Kloof Street (John Rennie, pers. comm., 2012; Doug Cole, field observations, 26/08/2013). On website www.cliftgranite.co.za, it is stated that Bellvue Quarry was opened for the supply of granite for Rhodes Memorial. The contract signed on 13/03/1906 for 26 000 cubic feet of granite at 2000 cubic feet per month. The granite is coarse-grained porphyritic and is from the Early Cambrian Cape Granite Suite.
