Rubiayat Omar Khayyam designed by F Sangorski and G Sutcliffe and bindery.  Translated by Edward Fitzgerald with an introduction by A C Benson, London, c.1910This decription pertains to a books in better condition than the one in question for export: Leather bound detail with central peacock with clasp. 2o (310 x 281 mm). Reproduced from an original manuscript written out and illuminated by F. Sangorski and G. Sutcliffe, and illustrated with miniatures in gold and colors by E. Geddes (plates discolored at edges as usual). Provenance: Chas. J. Sawyer, Ltd. (binding, catalogue description and illustration tipped on front flyleaves); Florence L. Payer (contemporary gift inscription from her husband, Harry F. Payer on front free endpaper; Harry Franklin Payer (1875-1952), was a Cleveland born lawyer, government official, and linguist. He graduated from Western Reserve University in 1897 and from Cleveland Law School in 1899, and became the senior member of the law firm of Payer, Winch, Minshall, & Karch. Nicknamed "Demosthenes" because of his oratorical abilities, Payer became one of the area's top criminal lawyers and was renown for the huge awards he gained in personal-injury cases.A JEWELLED PEACOCK BINDING SET WITH 31 JEWELS BY SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE: full red morocco, upper cover with central oval sunken panel of green morocco and a Peacock with outspread tail, the body inlaid in blue, white and brown morocco, the tail tooled in gold and morocco, peacock feathers tooled in gilt and morocco and set with 31 AMETHYST AND TURQUOISE STONES alternating within the eye of each peacock feather, the peacock's eye and comb in white morocco, surrounded by a diapered decoration of gilt floral and leaf tools with large rose and spray designs in gilt at each corner, within an outer border inlaid in blue morocco and richly gilt, lower cover in a matching border design with all-over floral pattern in large central panel, spine in six compartments, a gilt-lettered green morocco lettering piece in two, the others with an onlaid grape and vine or gilt rose and spray design, blue morocco doublures and blue silk linings, edges gilt and gauffered, two filigree brass claps each fitted with a single jewel, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for Chas. J. Sawyer, stamp-signed on front turn-in: "Bound for Chas. J. Sawyer Ltd., London" and stamp-signed by binders on rear doublure (minor rubbing at foot edge on spine, otherwise very fine); fleece-lined cloth folding case.
