    The site is of archaeological importance as it still contains the rear ramparts of the historical Amsterdam Battery one of the oldest structures in Cape Town prior to construction of the park archaeological digs were undertaken and two circular walls were uncovered and have been retained.     Original Position
    The Battery Park is situated on the site that was Amsterdam Battery which was built in 1784 and later was converted to a prison by the British in 1827. Although most of it has been demolished but there are still remnants of the original structure, making this an important historical site.
