The purpose of this Memorial is to honor the five British soldiers who's tombstones were destroyed by Boers. The British Graves. At first the Boers would not allow British graves in their graveyards, but eventually agreed to allow these graves in the furthest corner of the graveyard. The Five British soldiers graves were marked by beautiful marble tombstones, but the Boers destroyed these tombstones. Only one could be partially restored. One of the graves was that of PTE Snoad. He was a Royal Horse Guard, a mounted soldier. While he was dismounting, his foot got caught in the stirrup. As he fell, the bayonet on his rifle penetrated him, causing his death. The graves were formalized with stone plaques engraved with names of people who died during their horrible time in the Irene Concentration Camp.
