Charlton Smith of the 27th regime (Royal in killing fusilier) was beleaguered by the migrant Boers under commandant Andriers Pretorius in 1842 to secure for the Garrison Dick King rode 600mls to Grahams Town. From 1842 to 1897 it was occupied by various regiments and detachments of the British Army
