Griqua heritage. In 1823, the London Mission Society founded the mission station in Philippolis for local Khoe herders and San hunter-gatherers who were educated at the mission. Philippolis was the first settlement in the Free State. In 1826, a group of Griquas under the leadership of Adam Kok III settled in Philippolis until 1862 when they moved to East Griqualand which is known today as Kokstad. Many historical buildings in the town have been declared Provincial Heritage Sites.
