Descriptions
Westpark Cemetery is a large cemetery in Johannesburg. It has been an active cemetery since it opened in 1942 as burials are still allowed and performed. The cemetery is a resting place of some of the country’s well-known citizens such as Beyers Naude, Ahmed Kathrada, John Nkadimeng, Alfred Nzo, and Dr Neil Hudson Aggett to name a few. Historically the cemetery was part of one of Johannesburg original farms called Farm Waterval. The farm was purchased in 1887 by two Geldenhuys brothers in hope of finding gold. Due to the lack of gold on the premises, the brothers decided to donate 13 hectares to the city for public recreation. Thus, the farm, along with other sections, became the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Marks Park Sports Club, and West Park Cemetery.
