The SAHRA DAU is satisfied that the HIA addresses the possibility of maritime heritage being present during any proposed deep excavations and supports the following recommendations.
- Any future excavations or earthworks in the “maritime” portion of the V&A (seaward of the historical shoreline) which will penetrate to depths approximating or deeper than the level of the former seabed, are potentially sensitive and must be archaeologically monitored and submissions made to SAHRA as appropriate.
- Necessary contingencies must be put in place to allow the mitigation of shipwreck remains, should they be encountered.
The applicant is advised of the following:
- If any evidence of maritime and underwater cultural heritage is found during the proposed development, the SAHRA Development Applications Unit (DAU) (Natasha Higgitt 021 202 8660) must be alerted as per section 35(3) of the NHRA. Non-compliance with section of the NHRA is an offense in terms of section 51(1)e of the NHRA and item 5 of the Schedule.
- Any development below the HWM is nationally mandated and any future application for development below the HWM would fall under the remit of SAHRA.
