      Statement of Significance

      Erected in 1838 for use as a schoolhouse. Enlarged in 1843. Named after John Henry Sole who devoted most of his life to the advancement of the 'coloured' community of Grahamstown.

      The three properties with the Commemoration Church, Shaw Hall and the Sole Memorial Church thereon, described as follows:
      (i) Certain piece of land situate in High Street, Grahamstown, being a section of a part of Erf 41 (now known as Erf 1898, Grahamstown), in extent 2 432 (two thousand four hundred and thirty-two) square metres.
      Deed of Transfer 94/1849, dated 17 July 1849.
      (ii) Certain piece of land situate at Grahamstown, being sections of Lots 45 and 46 (now known as Remainder Erf 1636, Grahamstown), in extent 1 204 (one thousand two hundred and four) square metres.
      Deed of Transfer 123/1833, dated 26 February 1833.
      (iii) Certain piece of land, situate in High Street, Grahamstown, being part of Erf 47 (now known as Erf 1618, Grahamstown), in extent 874 (eight hundred and seventy-four) square matres.
      Deed of Transfer 204/1840, dated 25 September 1840.
