      Statement of Significance

      Col. Jacob Cuyler's camp stood on this site when he supervised the settlement of the 1820 Settlers on their allotments. The Governor, Sir Rufane Donkin also pitched his camp here when he determined the site of the town of Bathurst.

      Certain piece of land with the beacon and monument thereon, being a monument area of Part of Erf 1, Bathurst, situate in the Municipality of Bathurst, Administrative District of Bathurst, Province of the Cape of Good Hope, measuring 11.5779 morgen (diagram for proclamation purposes 1588/68), an unregistered subdivision of the remainder of the Bathurst town commonage Division of Bathurst (now known as the Remainder of Erf 1, Bathurst), measuring (as such) 3379.2919 morgen.
