      Statement of Significance

      This lighthouse was completed in 1849 and is the second oldest existing structure of its kind in South Africa. Since then it has contributed largely towards reducing the number of shipwrecks on the most dangerous part of the South African coastline.

      The three properties surrounding the Cape L'Agulhas lighthouse, described ad follows:

      Certain piece of land at Cape L'Agulhas, being the Remainder of Portion 3 of the farm Papenkuilsfontein 281, in the Division of Bredasdorp, in extent 42,7573 (forty-two comma seven five seven three) hectares. 'Deed of Transfer T6008/1902, dated 19 June 1902 (endorsement page 3).
      Certain piece of land at Cape L'Agulhas, being Portion 4 of the farm Papenkuilsfontein 281, in the Division of Bredasdorp, in extent 16,8451 (sixteen comma eight four five one) hectares. Deed of Transfer T8384/1902, dated 14 August 1902 (endorsement page 3).
      Certain piece of land at Cape L'Agulhas, being Portion 17 of the farm Papenkuilsfontein 281, in the Division of Bredasdorp, in extent 9 935 (nine thousand nine hundred and thirty-five) square metres. T2520/1931
